Alberta Print Makers & the H Project

H Project

A/P was excited to team up with Holt Renfrew at their recent H project event in May.

The H Project is a mini store inside Holt, ‘where every item in this shop meets one of three criteria: either the artisanal method with which they are made, the unique materials used, or the way they might celebrate a culture.

For instance, the item might help a fallen economy like Haiti by utilizing local artisans, or help to rebuild a community through a women’s co-operative. It could be made from recycled or cruelty-free products, or the process gives back to a charity such as the World Wildlife Fund.’

Take home one of these feel good buys in limited edition silkscreened bags printed by the Alberta Printmakers!

Be Sure to Say Hello to Lizzie!

say hello

A/P sought a summer intern and was pleased to find that there are some excellent students working in Calgary. After a difficult decision due to the quality of the applicants, we are excited to be working with Lizzie Carr from June through August.
Lizzie has been an independent curator for the past three years and recently started the Slate Art Group with the purpose of finding venues for emerging artists to display and sell their work in Calgary. She has just completed her third year at ACAD and will be graduating next year as a painting major. You will be seeing a lot of Lizzie this summer as she works with our organization and helps to set up our PIY festival. Be sure to say hello in June! Thank-you to the other strong applicants and to the Canada Summer Jobs program without whose fundingthis job would not exist.

Babs & Betty_2Artist Biography:

Multidisciplinary artist, Amy Gaulin, captures a nostalgic essence through paint, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, Follbookmaking, and many other media. She received her BFA in printmaking with distinction from the Alberta College of Art and Design, and currently resides in Calgary, Alberta.

Artist Statement:

The subjects in my artwork are found during explorations of my personal heritage. In this search I discover what character traits and sensibilities have been passed down through the generations in my family, and how my own disposition has been influenced from that past. The work in Following Traces focuses on two girls; one of whom is my grandmother, Betty (Elizabeth), and the other is her sister, Babs (Barbara).  They were as different in temperament as they were in appearance, and I begin to understand their characteristics as well as parallels to myself through the process of recreating this imagery.

Accidental Poetry by Briar Craig, Oct. 17 – Nov. 24

Accidental Poetry  by Briar Craig

October 17 – November 24, 2012

Opening Reception: Friday, October 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Artist in Attendance

Public Lecture with the Artist: Friday, October 19 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm

Artist Proof Gallery, 2010F 11 St. SE, Calgary, AB

The Alberta Printmakers’ Society and Artist Proof Gallery is pleased to present Okanagan-based artist Briar Craig’s exhibition of screenprints with nuances and subtleties made possible through ultra-violet print processes, Accidental Poetry.

Craig’s prints address the “information age” and the ever-increasing quantities of sensory information, and its impact on every individual.

Accidental Poetry employs the juxtaposition of disparate fragments of texts, imagery and objects to create a narrative-like dialogue where individual meanings become secondary to personally constructed content. Craig uses hand written text and weathered objects in order to reveal “clues” about the kinds of things that occupy our lives.

Reflecting Dada artists, poets and the absurdist playwrights, Craig’s exploration of systems of chance by uniting two or more words together, demonstrates the provocative and evocative potential in this unexpected relationship, arriving at what he considers accidental poetry. Utilizing printmaking as a post-modern approach to appropriation, Craig mirrors many aspects of modern mass media interlaced with elements of the tactile and personal.

Briar Craig is a printmaker and Associate Professor in the BFA program at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna. In a number of collections around the world including Poland, Japan and Croatia, Craig’s work has been exhibited internationally at the China Print Festival, in Oijiang, China; the Biennale Internationale D’Estampe Contemporaine de Trois-Rivieres, in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec; the International PRINT Exhibition (Pacific Rim Meets Istanbul) in Instanbul, Turkey; and the International Contemporary Printmakers Competition in Cornwall, UK.

Accidental Poetry will be on display in the Artist Proof Gallery from October 17 to November 24, 2012, with an opening reception on Friday, October 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  Craig will offer a lecture on October 17 at 5:30 pm. The Artist Proof Gallery is located at 2010F 11 St. SE in Calgary.  Gallery hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Admission is free and all are welcome! Free Parking.
