Artist Talk by Guy Langevin

On April 3rd, 2012 the Alberta Printmakers’ Society was pleased to co-present with Alberta College of Art & Design a lecture by Quebec based artist Guy Langevin.  The print students of ACAD were quite fortunate during this week of April by way of extensive and laborious demonstrations in printmaking techniques; suppressing my jealousy is still difficult after learning of these demonstrations.

Guy Langevin is an award-winning print artist based in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. Langevin graduated from Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in 1977. We were fortunate to have an artist with such an extensive and successful career share his experiences and thoughts with us during the evening.  I particularly enjoyed when he discussed his early years when supporting himself with a job, he would work superior hours in his studio in order to maintain his identity as an artist; I found that rather inspiring.

When Guy mentioned a series of lithographs needing over 12 stones, you could feel and hear a mild unease from the surroundings;  audience members not as familiar with lithography were spared the images of intense labour that entered many of our minds.

The images we were shown were quite diverse ranging from mezzotints, drawings, paintings, and installation; guy preferred the term mise-en-scène opposed to installation. I rather enjoyed when his work started to shift into the duality of precision and blurry images. The talk ran over time so we did not get any Q&A.  I was quick in going up to him as the theatre was clearing out to ask him about the poetry associated with his later work. Guy told me the older pieces with poetry were made from an old friend that passed away. He seemed interested with involving his work with poetry again but related it would be difficult to replace his friend.

We even had the opportunity to sift through some of his mezzotints on a table, although the poor lighting conditions in the theatre took some of the enjoyment. My only regret for the evening was lack of questions from the audience as I have little doubt the answers would have been quite interesting.
