The exploration of the concept of accumulation in its diverse facets is the primary theme of work that Yannick Desranleau and Chloe Lum do under the name Séripop. Since 2002, this Montreal duo’s work has developed out of self reflection on dialogues created by their own street posters. Through the observations of the accumulation their posters in the urban setting, they work to recreate the experience by using the poster as a sculptural object.
“La Battue is an experiment on the physical evolution of the poster within a given environment. By trying to recreate the weathering process that happens on the multiple layers of street posters on the hoardings of the city, we are investigating accidental meanings and forms through daily documentation. The installation is also a game with the viewer, by boldly implicating the viewer directly in the decay process that will make the work aggregate parcels of meaning.” -Seripop
“We see the street poster as the “skin” of a city, growing and shedding organically, in constant flux, allowing citizens to make their temporary mark. … we seek to engage in playful discussion about both the individual and community’s role vis-a-vis freedom of expression within the urban landscape, via the colloquial and/or the monumental.” -Excerpt from catalog for Hording Skinshown in 2010 at the Secret Project Robot, Brooklyn, New York.
